Simple or complex carbohydrate?
Simple carbohydrates are a big no-no to consume during pregnancy as they converted to sugar very easily in the body. This cause quick completion of energy and power and thus enhance obesity. Processed food, refined oil, white bread, white rice, chips, candy etc are big examples of simple carbohydrates.
And complex carbohydrate helps the body to provide energy for a longer time and thus entertain obesity to affect body. Foods like, whole-grain such as, oatmeal, legumes, starchy vegetables, brown bread, brown rice, baked potatoes, fresh fruits, etc. These are the carbohydrate needed during pregnancy. Though fresh fruits contain simple carbohydrate but it also contain fiber and essential nutrients which are necessary during pregnancy. Carbohydrates are the main source of fuel which contains phytonutrients. These phytonutrients act like antioxidants which keeps the body healthier. The fibers contained in fruits help to free from constipation which is a big problem during pregnancy. It also helps the pregnant ladies to keep the blood sugar levels steady.
Recommended amount of carbohydrates for pregnant women
The institute of medicine reports that around 45 to 65 percent of our daily calories should come from carbohydrate sources. So 175 grams of carbohydrates should be eaten to take right amount of carbohydrates. And for pregnant ladies it is recommended to eat 9 to 11 types of dishes per day containing carbohydrates. But eye should be kept upon the serving size which varies from places to places. The carbohydrates should come mostly from whole grains. Those had a polycystic ovary syndrome or overweight issue must consult with their doctors about their diet. But to intake carbohydrates the weight should not be loosen as it will directly affect the baby inside. To do anything like doctor’s consultation is must.
For most pregnant women the ideal scenario is that they should have 1800, 2200, followed by 2400 calories during the course of pregnancy. A diet which is modelled on healthier starch content can ensure that the blood sugar levels are steady which goes a long way in reducing the complications associated with pregnancy. Fruits and vegetables, food grain or potatoes which are eaten with skin on them are all excellent sources of fiber. In addition to this it keeps your digestive system healthy and regular. This is all the more important during the stages of pregnancy when constipation poses a major problem for women.
